Nevskey Prospekt 1917. 2018. 56x76cm. Watercolour & ink on Fabriano paper.
A reinterpretation of a contemporary photograph attributed to Victor Bulla whose family owned a photography business on Nevsky Prospect.
I assume this was taken from a room high above the street or possibly from the roof. The demonstration (possibly armed) which it records had been going on for a day or so (on & off) and in the end was brutally put down with the machine guns of the Provisional Government. The photogaph records the moment when the guns opened fire: the killed and injured lie in the street as the survivors run for their lives.
